‘‘The air is part of the mountain…as soon as we see them clothed in air the hills become blue. Every shade of blue, from opalescent milky-white to indigo is there”

(From The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd)

Gorm

‘Gorm’ is the Scottish Gaelic word for blue - ‘Cairngorm’ meaning ‘blue mountain’. The light in this area bathes the landscape in a surreal array of blues as described in the above quote by Nan Shepherd who spent a lifetime exploring, engaging and connecting with this wild and inhospitable highland region.

In November last year I was fortunate enough to spend time with Valda Bailey and Doug Chinnery and a group of other talented photographers during a Creative Growth Workshop in the Cairngorms. The creative process is an ongoing one as we learn to step out of our comfort zones, experiment and take those all important steps along a journey of revelation, renewal and enlightenment as we discover our own creative path. This week long workshop enabled me to further experiment with the in camera techniques such as multiple exposure and ICM (intentional camera movement) to create abstract representations of not only what caught my eye but also of what it felt like to be among the colours, contours and coldness of the Cairngorms.
